Type:

B2C mobile app

Sector:

Health, wellness, entertainment

Context

Deezer, the French music streaming service, wanted to diversify its activity by addressing a new market as an experimentation. The concept was to keep doing what the companies does best (streaming) and produce a dedicated catalog of audio and video content related to wellness. That's how the mobile application "Zen by Deezer" was born.

Targets

#1

Become the holistic app of wellness

By offering content on various areas of wellness (yoga, meditation, sports, nutrition, self-development) instead of mastering a single specialty as competitors do (Down Dog, Petit Bambou, Headspace).

My contribution

During the whole project, I led a team of 2 product designers working exclusively on Zen by Deezer (while leading 2 other applications creation in parallel). As the project became more strategic, I started to contribute personally to the delivery in addition to my management role.

Playing behavior

We first thought that we should apply music playing rules to Zen's content. But it appears that yoga or meditation episodes are not meant to be played in a row like music does. Except that Zen offers both music and non-music content. Users were complaining.

So we introduced a screen between each episode in addition of an option accessible from the player.

Personalisation

The homepage evolves during the day, offering one header for each moment of the day (morning, day, evening, and night). There is a matching illustration for each context, with a welcoming message and a piece of advice (changing each day).

We went through several iterations (A/B test, test in production) to get something both appealing and useful to users.
